Welcome

Hi, I'm Betsy, of Betsy & John photography. I'm wife to John, mother to Miles (the sweetest little boy you'll ever meet) and photographer to the lovely people that invite me to capture them. This is my cozy little place I come to share what's going on in my world & show you what Betsy & John Photography is up to.

fun with four plus two

Does anybody remember last winter when I had a photo shoot up for auction at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s annual fundraising gala? I lucked out to have the very coolest family possible to bid on us and win. Oh, and to top it off, the winner’s name is BETSY, she has the cutest kids and just so happens to know the majority of my clients from the last year. (We just kept finding people we both knew. We were even shooting at a home that one of my previous clients used to own! Such a small world.) Oh, and Betsy and I are both the same as we HATE to wear shoes and I seriously felt like I could have chatted with her all night long. We will be having coffee soon to get caught up on the things we couldn’t fit in between shots.

Let’s start off with Betsy and her husband Jim’s kids. This is literally the first family of four that makes me ponder possibly having a large family someday. They definitely made me ponder living in the country. This was one of those shoots where John and I were overstimulated with the 8 million possibly locations for photos.

We got a little meditative….

and a little nutty…Tom NAILED the nutty look. ;-)

I’m usually AWFUL with names, especially when I’m shooting, but I tried reallllly hard to get them down for this shoot. Here’s Sara, Lucy, Tom and Grace. Just thinking back at how sweet and easy going they were for their shoot just makes me smile. Speaking of smiles, Lucy’s smile here is PERFECT.

 mg 2361

I heard from Betsy that a certain little Grace was feeling like a star after the shoot. Wonder why? She is the baby of the family and it’s ADORABLE to see those kids carry her around and dote on her. Oh and did you see that adorable Lizzy Anne dress that daddy just picked out for her? So cute! Oh and look at Sarah’s pigtails in this photo. Again, love it!

 mg 2688

I never forget mom and dad. These two were great and so laid back. I kept thinking that I wanted them to sit us down and teach us everything we should know about raising kids. I mean, we only have our little Miles and they have four so we have LOTS we can learn from these two. (Betsy, just add that to the 5 million things we can chat about when we meet for coffee.) By the way, Betsy and I NEVER have to deal with anybody else having our name so we were both confused all night long as someone would say our name. It never ceased to make me laugh.

This is only supposed to be a sneak peek, but I got a little carried away. (The debates tonight had me all fired up and hyper!)

Since I really need to wrap this sneak peek up and save some for later, I’ll leave this photo as a little foreshadowing of what’s to come….

less than a week away

In less than a week there will be a Target open within 5 minutes of me. DANGER!!!! Tonight they are having a VIP opening. How did I NOT get on THAT list? Sheesh!

pumpkiny goodness

You know I love fall, but you know what I love even more? Saturday afternoons with my two precious guys. We played at the pumpkin patch down the road from us this past weekend as we didn’t have time to take in the entire fall festival at Hilgers Farm Market. It was perfect for a quick fall fix. My only embarrassment from the day is when Miles would pick up the $1 small pumpkins and start chucking them! When he wasn’t trying to throw them he would kick them. Yikes! The kid loves to kick and throw things more than anything else. (Ok, he still is obsessed with trying on everybody’s shoes.) Of course John & I, the artsy fartsy couple, have a child that is constantly dying to play sports. (No worries, we are adapting, our back yard has every type of ball you can imagine.)

So without further delay, here are some photos from the afternoon. Soak up the Miles photos Grandma King and Grandma Smith, the rest of the week is dedicated to client photos! (At least my photo work is, I can’t make promises how many will make the blog…soon though!)

Look at that busy little man! (That shirt Miles is wearing is a 2T. When did my baby become a TODDLER?)

 mg 2189

Daddy stealing a kiss from those kissable cheaks. Miles tasted the gourd and said, “YUCKY!”

 mg 2201

I was singing a fall favorite around our house, “Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate…” (To the photographers reading this, I have a heckuva time wbing at a pumpkin patch with all that orange around! Anybody else feel my pain?)

 mg 2108

 mg 2131

On more than one occasion Miles would try to climb into to the gourd bin.

 mg 2085

Um, do you blame him?

 mg 2097

Miles’ expression in this photo cracks me up. Look at how cute John is. He is such a smiley guy. :-D

 mg 2179

Oh and here’s our family photo taken by the farmer working the stand. The guy forgot to mention that my hair was a wreck, but hey, his job is to sell pumpkins, so I realize I was on my own here.

 mg 2213

I rarely take my camera when we are doing family stuff, but come on, it’s a pumpkin patch! It’s expected!!!

On one more random note, Miles loves to pull things and if anything even REMOTELY looks like a phone (like a pencil, stick, banana, you get the idea) he puts it up to his ear and says, “Hello???” and starts chatting away. I found one of these vintage phones on Ebay tonight for $1.99 to hopefully satiate his phone imaginary play. I suppose it’s more creative to make up your own phone…Eh, he’ll still have fun with this.

i love fall

and adorable families that are up for anything. More on these cuties later.

new toy

Grandma brought a new toy that Miles can’t’ keep his hands off of since it first graced our kitchen floor. It’s kind of amazing to see him play with a toy for longer than ten minutes, he’s usually moving on by then. Good call Grandma! (Though our house gets smaller and smaller with each new toy coming in….)

Pumpkin patch photos coming soon including a photo taken by an actual farmer in overalls and a beard longer than my hair. Yep, I handed my 5D over to a total stranger (something I would NEVER usually do) to take our family photo!!! He offered, I didn’t want to seem like a jerk and we never get a photo of the three of us. So I went for it. John stifled a laugh as I carefully placed the camera strap around the man’s neck. I set up the camera and he did a great job! You’ll see that photo soon. I need to get to bed, we have a super fun family shoot tomorrow (the mom’s name is BETSY! Woo hoo!) and hopefully tomorrow will be as beautiful as today.

friday funness

If I was still in school, today would have been considered a surprise half day. Half days always seemed to come this time of year and were AWeSOME and felt a bit like this, didn’t they? (look at that happy little Miles face!!)

 mg 8519

Here’s why it was such a fun day.

We had Kindermusik this morning and we LOVE every single minute of that class and are meeting the sweetest people there. It’s become something I look forward to all week long, especially now since we have added a pit stop on the way home at the doughnut shop. (There’s a new bakery on Jefferson and their glazed doughnuts are TO DIE FOR.) So after class I did some work and then when Miles woke up from his nap, my mom stopped by. I wasn’t planning on it, but she offered to watch Miles for a bit and I ran out and did some quick toddler free shopping. (Thank you Grandma, I’m sure you didn’t know you were stepping into a two hour babysitting session. Bless you!)

Wow! I was a shoppin fool with the freedom of just me to run around. (I even got to spend some time in the racy book section of Barnes & Noble for a bachelorette gift…something that feels weird already (albeit totally fun), but would have been even weirder with Miles in tow. Not sure that would have even happened….) I picked up some pumpkins (yippee! Orange color pop to my house! ), got 14 random things at the grocery store, oh and had to pick up a garbage disposal at Lowes since ours broke this morning and has currently left the kitchen smelling DISGUSTING. I couldn’t help but take my time to day dream a bit in the kitchen and bath area, something I would never do with Miles in tow. So that’s where the extra “half day off” came in.

When I returned, my much anticipated Pulp Products custom bulletin board came in. (Three weeks in the waiting. UGH!) I have a two calendar system (though I could easily use 4…) where I need to see two months at a glance at any given time in the day. Yea, I have stuff on the computer calendar (plus my future iphone which I will be getting this Christmas. It’s soooo going to happen, I don’t care if I have to break contract with Verizon!) but honestly, I’m a pencil and paper person for the most part. So instead of tacking the calendars up on the wall like a jail cell, I wanted a nice fabric covered board I could put my calendars on so it wouldn’t look all janky in my kitchen/dining area. Plus, I wanted them to match other frames I have going on.

So behold, my new board. That fabric is self healing, you can’t see the push pin holes to save your life. I get excited about the dumbest things.:

 mg 2054

Here’s my board with my two calendar system, though I’m sure it will change over time. See how torn up my calendars look? for THREE WEEKS, these calendars have been tossed around the kitchen, floating aimlessly (and getting spilled on) as they waited for their hanging spot. It kind of drove us nuts.

 mg 2063

I know, I know, this doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I have been looking for a board like this (one that is nice enough to be in a major space in our home) and waiting for it so long that I’m just happy it’s here and now that it is, I have an entire wall project that can commence. I’m excited as I have had a BLANK wall in our dining area for about 6 months now and I’m ready to get some photography on it!

So poor John has lots to do to help me out this weekend from my little shopping sprees I’ve been on. He’s got a garbage disposal to install, my board to hang plus the array of frames I have purchased for the rest of my kitchen/dining area wall. Bless him for being such a sweetie. I STINK at hanging photos, so trust me, nobody wants me in charge of the project. Oh and if we have time, I want to clean the garage. I sound like a JOY to be married to, don’t I? :-)

Have a great weekend and hopefully any projects you have are fun and you and like we always do, make time for lazy weekend mornings to just snuggle and chill.

knitted goodness & other amy-ness

Remember how I said the genius behind Sarah Jane’s Yarn Shoppe made a custom hat for Miles a while back? Well, here are some more shots of my little guy exploring our backyard wearing it. Of course he gravitated to the loveliest part of our house, the air conditioner covered in bird doody. Ahhh, he knows how to pick the nice photo op spots. ;-) So again, I have to mention that this hat was made in one evening (finished by 3 AM, actually) during an all night knit at the yarn shoppe.

Also, HAPPY OCTOBER! This is my FAVORITE month ever. We went shopping for halloween costumes tonight but no luck yet. Miles looked adorable as a monkey and a lion, but we just weren’t convinced. We’ll see.

By the way, he is feeling MUCH better today. Thank God, we need that baby well enough for some serious pumpkin picking this weekend!

PS I talked to my BFF Amy tonight about her wedding (that I’m in and I LOVE my bridesmaid dress. YIPPPPEE!!) and I just have to say ONE more time how completely THRILLED I am that she has found such an amazing love. You know, you like to think your own marriage is the most amazing love ever, but jeez louise, Amy and John blow me away. Their love is so beautiful. Amy, I hope you don’t mind, but I have to share this. So John proposed to Amy on Friday (they live on the East Coast) and then he flew both of their parents in the next day to surprise Amy. Oh, and he had an engagement party planned. WOW!!! Um, John, it’s verrrry safe to say that I APPROVE of you times a thousand. It makes my heart so happy to see my BFF with such a good and loving man. (Amy, can you believe we both married guys with the same name? I mean, it’s like the most common name ever, but still.) I’ll be shooting some engagement photos of them this December so keep your eyes peeled. I CAN’T WAIT to get my lens on those two love birds. (Plus it will guarantee that I will get to see them as Amy’s calendar is always packed when she is in town.)

Ok, Im shushing. John has beat me to bed so I’m off to go snuggle before he falls asleep!

Claire’s sneak peek

Claire found me on facebook through another senior I had shot. (thank you Paul!) She contacted me and we chatted about photos but didn’t nail anything down. Then I ran into her randomly at Sunny Schick camera shop and I recognized her and we chatted a bit more. We figured it was meant to be to run into each other out of all places! She just so happens to work at one of my favorite coffee shops AND I managed/lifeguarded at the neighborhood pool she lived when she was kid. So it feels like we have ten little connections going on. Fort Wayne is a small place sometime. ;-)

So here is Claire, heading into her senior year with Northwestern (and a couple more universities) on her mind.

 mg 1945

 mg 1898

I LOVE this one. She looks so classic the way the lace of her shirt frames her face and her earrings just so happen to match the color of the wood wall behind her. Claire, you are GORGEOUS!! Such a natural beauty.

 mg 1325

I have to say, I’m pretty proud that I got this big of a laugh within the first 5 minutes of the shoot. Yippee! It usually takes a while for everybody (me included!) to get warmed up, but Claire was ready to roll from the first shot.

 mg 1284

More to come later Claire. We had a great time shooting you and hanging out Sunday afternoon. Best of luck and keep us posted on which university ends up getting luck to have you! Oh, and I’m sure you’ll be seeing me soon at your coffee shop, that black cherry vanilla chai latte you speak of sounds YUMMY and like my new addiction.

Alright, this is my third blog post today and John is making fun of me. So I’m hopping off and getting a life!

it’s 10:22 pm

and Miles is still up. This time not because he’s sick, but because he is WIRED. So he got to burn off stome steam with the photobooth camera.

Milesupstill

He must think he gets another late night Sesame Street marathon. Nope, not tonight. You have to be miserable to get that royal treatment around here. So he’s chatting away upstairs. He’s currently listing all the different types of balls he knows about: soccer ball, shoeball, football..back to soccerball, shoeball, football…

Hmmm, just got quiet. Back to work for me! Photos of Claire coming right up!

coming soon…

Some of Claire’s senior photos. Until then, an action shot of John shooting miss Claire and her sassy boots.
